Why should you wear a turtleneck?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
The turtleneck (πλεκτά), col roulé, polo neck or turtleneck, as you will come across in several fashion texts, is one of the pieces of the women’s wardrobe characterized by timeless charm and elegance. The first time it appears in the history of the garment was in the 19th century as part of the uniform worn by equestrian athletes.

Subsequently, it was loved by the nobility of the 20th century, as well as stars of the era such as Marlene Dietrick. The one who convinced women to incorporate the turtleneck into their style, however, was Audrey Hepburn, when she wore it in the 1957 film “Funny Face”.

From then until today, the turtleneck belongs to the category of clothing characterized by timelessness and refinement, it is an integral part of winter style and a purchase that is definitely worth making before we officially welcome winter. Why;

1. It is ideal for the low temperature

Starting to organize and renew your winter wardrobe, one of the staples that should not be missing from your collection is the turtleneck. The comfortable and very practical top that is going to keep you warm no matter how low the temperature is. The fact that the turtleneck can be worn from morning to night makes it a must have for the winter, since it will make everyday dressing an easier and cozy process.

2. You can create layering

The more the temperature drops, the more you need to discover new ways to dress stylishly and cozy. Turtlenecks are invaluable in achieving this goal, as they will help you create layering in your winter ensembles. How; Wear them over shirts, dresses, vests, cardigans and jumpsuits for extra warmth and comfort.

3. Upgrades an appearance

If you’re looking to update your winter outfit, then a turtleneck is definitely an easy way to achieve that goal. In addition to neutral shades such as black, beige, gray, a turtleneck in an intense color such as hot pink or sky blue, according to the color trends of the season, is a must. Equally interesting are the oversized turtleneck sweaters, which are combined both with flared jeans and a belt at the waist for a 70s inspired ensemble, as well as with skirts.

4. Goes with everything

One of the most important reasons to enrich your winter wardrobe with more turtlenecks is that they easily match with different bottoms. Whether you want to wear a skirt of any length or a suit or jeans or tailored trousers, a turtleneck is going to upgrade your outfit, giving it a dose of understated elegance.

5. It is timeless

No matter how many years pass, no matter how fashion trends change, a turtleneck blouse or sweater is not going to lose its value. It is one of the timeless pieces of the women’s wardrobe that manages to keep up with the trends without losing its all time classic finesse.

What do the French women’s autumn essentials include?

In the “Mecca of Fashion” that is Paris and all of France, if you ask me, you’d expect the residents to feel the need to constantly flaunt couture creations. Still, even if their clothes may have been signed by recognized designers, the everyday pieces of French women are based on versatility. So, they may not wear couture clothes all the time, but the innate style “flows” in their blood and is what always fascinates us in their appearances, even if they support the classics of the wardrobe.

This also applies to the autumn essentials of the wardrobe, which even if they are based on a timeless design, always have a modern mood. This is because they pay attention to details. Whatever the list of autumn essentials includes they always make sure they have a perfect fit, are tailored and of course have a timeless design.

These are the foundations of French women’s style, as far as their everyday life is concerned. So, they can use these fall essentials any way they want. Either combining them together for effortless, stylish looks, or mixing them with more statement pieces, aiming for more unique ensembles. Embracing, therefore, a minimal wardrobe, they can offer multiple outfits. Nothing stops us from doing the same.

Recipe: Nectarine Crisp (Gluten-Free, Grain-Free)

One of the best things about the summer season is the amazing bounty of fresh fruits that are available.  There’s strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, watermelons, peaches and one of my absolute favorites – the nectarine! Juicy, sweet, and little tart, there is nothing better than a perfectly ripe nectarine on a hot summer day. Wonderful as a healthy snack on its own or sliced into salads, the nectarine is just darn delicious. But have you ever found yourself with an abundance of nectarines and are looking for a new and creative way to use them? We thought, why not bake them into a healthy version of a crumbly, buttery crisp? Here’s how we did it:

First  Step: We began by slicing all our nectarines and removing the pits. If you’re wondering how to properly cut up a nectarine or other stone fruits (peaches, plums, apricots, etc.) without hacking them to bits you can check out this article on How to Pit Apricots, Plums, Nectarines, & Other Stone Fruits Like a Chef.

Second Step: Next we measured out the dry ingredients into a bowl, mixed them together and then cut in small pieces of cold butter to create the crisp or crumble. Is there a difference? Call it what you like at the end of the day its delicious. We decided to make this Nectarine Crisp gluten free using a combination of blanched almond flour, oats, brown sugar and pecans for a little extra crunch and nutty goodness. If you don’t have pecans you could always substitute almonds or walnuts. For those with a nut allergy you could skip them entirely.

Nectarine Crumble Recipe | www.onbetterliving.com

Third Step: Toss the cut nectarine slices with a little sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. A few dashes of vanilla extract and then the nectarines are spooned into a dish for baking. We used these mini cast iron serving dishes greased with butter because they’re adorable. If you decide to bake these in smaller, individual sized baking dishes the baking time will be much shorter.

Nectarine Crumble Recipes | www.onbetterliving.com

The nectarine crisp was baked for about 30 minutes at 350 degrees. You’ll know it’s finished when the top is a nice toasty brown and some of the baked fruit should be bubbling around the sides. Almond flour has a tendency to toast quickly and can burn easily. Make sure you bake it on the middle rack of your oven and as always keep an eye on it. If it does start to brown but, you feel the fruit isn’t quite ready yet cover it with foil and continue baking.

This gluten-free and grain-free nectarine crisp is a yummy twist on the classic crisp while using healthy and hearty ingredients. Tons of summer flavor without all the guilt. Don’t have enough nectarines? Try adding in peaches, plums, or berries.  In place of the almond flour, you can always substitute regular wheat flour, cassava flour or a gluten-free blend with a 1:1 ratio.

  • 1/8 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon optional
  • 2 teaspoons arrowroot starch (or corn starch )

Instructions

Preparing The Fruit

  • Slice and peel the nectarines. Place in a bowl and then toss well with the lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon and corn (or arrowroot) starch to evenly coat. Then spoon the nectarines into a greased 9×9 baking dish.

  • Combine the flour, brown sugar, salt, oatmeal, nuts (if using) and the cold, diced butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Summer Fun, Food, and Shopping at Peddler’s Village

Heading to the shore is the default summer trip, but this year the thought of crowded boardwalks, beach traffic, and shielding a bucket of french fries from dive-bombing seagulls had me less than enthusiastic. Instead, on what happened to be the hottest day of summer, I headed to Peddlers Village in the rolling countryside of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. One of the state’s most unique destinations, Peddler’s Village is a colonial 18th-century style village with over 65+ open-air shops, a 70 room inn, and even a restored working 1922 antique carousel. With 9 restaurants, a taproom, a wine tasting room, and gourmet treats of all kinds, Peddler’s Village is a playground for foodies.

With Pennsylvania country charm nestled in every corner, Peddlers Village is like a real life Mayberry that attracts visitors from all over year-round. One of my favorite things about Peddler’s Village is that in between treasure seeking in postcard perfect country shops, you can also enjoy the outdoors as you stroll through winding brick pathways with lush blooming gardens. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the summer weather while getting some shopping in.

Peddler’s Village History. How it Began With a Farmers Market and a California Dream.

After a few trips to California in the late 1950s and early ’60s, Earl Jamison, a lifelong Bucks County resident who ran a farmers market, found himself in awe of the romantic storybook-style architecture he discovered in Carmel-by-the-Sea and Disneyland. So much so, he was inspired to create something similar back home. With an ability to turn his dreams into reality like Disney himself, Jamison got to work. Securing a $6000 loan from his uncle, Earl purchased an old 6-acre chicken farm in the small town of Lahaska, PA. Seamlessly blending the farm’s original historic buildings into the design of his charming colonial shopping village, Earl opened Peddler’s Village with only 1 restaurant (the Cock n’ Bull) and 14 shops. With much success and growth over the years, Peddler’s Village now spans over 42 acres and is considered one of the region’s favorite destinations for shopping and events year-round.

Don’t Miss The Shops at Peddler’s Village!

Peddler's Village 100 Peddlers Village, New Hope, PA 18938

Shopping in Peddler’s Village is all about walking into a small charming boutique or shop to see what unique treasures and treats you might find inside.

Ninety-five percent of the shops in Peddler’s Village are locally owned small businesses that carry unique and exclusive products.  You’ll find everything from home goods and clothing, to art, collectibles, jewelry, books, toys, and a delicious variety of gourmet specialty foods. Here are a few of our favorite shops in the village!

Experience a Little Christmas In Summertime at Pine Wreath & Candle

Located across from the gazebo in an early colonial style saltbox and flanked by a working water wheel, Pine and Wreath ltd. is one of most iconic shops at Peddler’s Village, inside and out. Here you can stop in to get a dose of Christmas in summertime while shopping their massive collection of Christmas ornaments and country-style home décor, as well as a huge selection of candles of all shapes and sizes. A great place to grab a souvenir, this shop had me happy and in the holiday spirit even in 95-degree weather.

Become a Kid in a Candy Store Again at Skip’s Candy Corner

Skip’s Candy Corner has been going strong in Peddler’s Village for over 35 sweet years. And it’s not hard to understand why. Along with Skip’s contagious Willy Wonka-like passion for sweets, here you’ll find gourmet chocolates and an incredible selection of candy in all its colorful and whimsical forms.

Fudge at Skip's Candy Corner, 27 Peddlers Village, Lahaska, PA 18931You’ll find chocolate treats like truffles, gourmet pretzels, caramels, turtles, nonpareils, sea salt bark, peppermint patties, cherry cordials, s’mores, and buckeyes that Skip makes with his own curated blend of imported chocolate. My mom, who’s a tough critic, took one bite of Skip’s almond buttercrunch and declared it as the best she’s ever had. I walked into Skip’s shop “not a fudge person” and left there obsessed with every fudge Skip offered us to try. Aside from chocolates, jelly beans, gummies, and fun candy gifts with themes like Pac-Man and I Love Lucy, Skip’s Candy Corner also carries a great selection of hard-to-find vintage candies as well as a line of gourmet nut-free confections manufactured at a special facility. This shop is special all year round, but don’t miss Skip’s special seasonal treats like his watermelon fudge that celebrates summer.

Did you know that honey is one of the few foods that never spoils? Or that two tablespoons of honey could fuel a bee’s flight around the world? There’s no doubt that bees are incredible, but after a recent visit to Peddler’s Village and a chat with shop owner Stephen, I now have an even greater appreciation for these pollinators and the wonder that is honey. Stephen, a food chemist who’s an expert in a technique called withholding, knows just what it takes to encourage plants to produce super-concentrated flower nectar that is super irresistible to thirsty bees and also determines the final flavor of their honey. So with 12 bee colonies buzzing on farms all across the country, Sticky Situations offers artisanal raw honey in an incredible selection of flavors I’ve never seen anywhere else. The honey here is 100% raw, which means it’s not heated or processed, and this is important in preserving the honey’s beneficial nutrients and flavors.

StickySituations

We had a great time tasting all the honey here while discovering where each was from and suggestions of what each could be paired with. We had to take home the dark chocolate, habanero, ginger, and anise honey, but their blueberry, raspberry, and green apple honey had me dreaming up ways I could infuse them into my next baking project. You’re going to want to stock up for yourself (and we don’t blame you), but stop in if you need a unique gift for the foodie in your life.

Kick Up Your Cooking Game with Gourmet Infused Oils and Vinegars at Extra Virgin.

To continue the gourmet tasting experience, we headed next door to Stephen’s sister store Extra Virgin. Inspired by a passion for the fresh high-quality foods he enjoyed growing up on the Amalfi Coast, owner Stephen opened Extra Virgin with the purpose of offering premium artisan olive oils and infused bottles of vinegar. This creative shop offers an in-store experience similar to a wine tasting. It’s all about the flavors here and as you browse the shop, you’re encouraged to give everything a taste. When you find your favorites, you can then have your oil and vinegar selections blended at their bar so you can discover which combinations speak to your palette oil. Pretty cool right?

Extra Virgin 64 Peddler's Village, Lahaska, PA 18931

One delicious flavor combination we tried that Stephen referred to as “Sicily in a jar,” was a mix of their Meyer lemon-infused olive oil and their Blood Orange Vinegar. Absolutely perfect for summer! Besides olive, Extra Virgin also has a variety of other flavor-infused oils like their green tea avocado oil, guacamole avocado oil, toasted walnut grapeseed oil, and sriracha grapeseed oil. There’s also imported Italian pasta in a variety of shapes and colors that will knock your socks off.

Our philosophy is, the spicier the better, so when we discovered a hot sauce tasting room just a few steps from our room, we were determined to find new ways to set our mouths on fire. The newest kid on the block here in the village, Inferno carries over 75 gourmet hot sauces, all of which you can try before you buy. Many of the hot sauces are Inferno’s own unique recipes, but they also carry a large selection of sauce brands from around the globe. One of the first things you’ll notice in the shop is the huge mural of a Scoville meter hanging over the shelves toward the back. Not only a pretty picture, it also serves as the guide for Inferno’s own taste test challenge. Can you see where this is going?

Inferno Hot Sauce Shop at 161 Peddlers Village, Lahaska, PA 18931Here’s how it works: the hot sauces under the meter are arranged by level of heat. The sauces start out mild and fruity but intensify in heat as you keep moving. The last group of sauces has crazy hot peppers like Carolina Reaper and might have you calling the fire department. Inferno Hot Sauce Shop at 161 Peddlers Village, Lahaska, PA 18931Although we didn’t go full steam ahead on the hottest of the hot sauces, we did quite a bit of tasting and found some new favorites including Inferno’s Taco Sauce, Serrano Sauce, and their Scotch Bonnet Scorpion. Inferno also carries fermented hot sauces, as well as dried chili peppers, and other spicy foods like jams, chips, mustards, condiments, and salsa.

One of the many things we love about Chaddsford Winery is that they always seem to find a way to make drinking a glass of wine even more enjoyable. In the summer that means sangria wine slushies and omg – wine pops! We tried their Strawberry Sunset Wine Pop made with fresh strawberries served in a chilled glass of the Sunset Blush and declared it our new summer must-have.  When the weather’s nice, we recommend you sit out front on their patio to enjoy the quaint village vibes, but their airy lounge is nice too if you prefer to stay cool inside.

Nina’s Waffles

Walking around in the village on a hot summer day, we made a beeline for Nina’s Waffles & Ice-Cream when it was time for a treat. Along with small-batch ice cream in some seriously delicious flavors, Nina’s specializes in Liege waffles. Another Belgium born waffle made famous by the city it was named after, Liege waffles are made with a brioche-style yeast dough instead of a batter.

Nina’s WafflesBefore being pressed they’re sprinkled with a coarse sugar that creates a lovely caramelization on the outside of the waffle once heated. Delightfully dense and chewy, what sets these waffles apart is the slight crunch you get from the caramelization of the sugar along the waffle’s irregular edges. Nina’s WafflesA freshly made Liege waffle at Nina’s is a treat all on its own but we topped ours with a scoop of their Madagascar vanilla ice cream with chunks of saltine cracker brittle, bits of toffee, and chocolate called Mad Crack. One bite and we fell in love. If you’re grabbing some ice cream to walk around with, waffle cones and cups are also available. Don’t miss out on the toppings like dulce de leche, whipped cream, and sprinkles!

The first restaurant in the village, and about to celebrate its 60th year in business (simply amazing), the Cock ‘n Bull has been a tradition for the locals here for generations. Recently they’ve revamped the menu with fresh, new and seasonal dishes inspired by southern and international cuisine while preserving favorite long-time Cock ‘n Bull classics like their Chicken Pot Pie and French Onion Soup. We ordered and loved the Buttermilk Fried Chicken appetizer served over cornbread and drizzled with bourbon honey syrup. It’s incredible.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken at the Cock'n Bull Route 263 and, Street Rd, Lahaska, PA 18931

We also tried the Pan-Grill Branzino, which was fresh, buttery, and prepared perfectly. Their classic Short Rib Burgundy, which is marinated and served in a sourdough bread bowl, was also hearty and satisfying. For next time, we have our eye on one of their newest and most popular dishes – the Voodoo Pasta, made with scallops, sweet bell peppers, and andouille sausage in a blistered tomato-garlic sauce over linguini. Don’t leave without trying one of their house-made desserts. We ordered the Deep Dish Apple Pie served with creamy vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel. It was the perfect sweet ending to a delicious dinner. With the Cock ‘n Bull’s colonial Pennsylvania country charm and the wonderful service we received from our server Jean, who has incredibly been there for over 35 years, there’s no doubt will be making a return.

On my first trip to Peddlers Village, I went map-free and got a handle on the layout pretty quickly. But if you like to “know before you go” head over to their Hospitality Center in the lobby of the Cock ’n Bull Restaurant for recommendations, physical maps, and local info.

Go Monday to Thursday to Beat Weekend Crowds – Most big events take place on the weekends, which means lots of people. Visiting midweek had us feeling like we had the place to ourselves. Certain shops do close by 5 pm during the week, so be sure to give yourself enough time to explore.

Enjoy Plenty of Outdoor Dining – Whether you’re concerned about Covid or just love being outside in summer, 5 restaurants in the village offer full-service outdoor dining restaurants. All the restaurants offer takeout that can be enjoyed at one of the many outdoor tables. Picnic blankets are welcome in designated grassy areas.

Parking is Free:  The village is surrounded by many parking lots which are all free for visitors. Guests at the Golden Plough Inn are assigned personal parking spots close to their rooms, located throughout the village.

Make it a Getaway – Day trips here are great, but staying overnight is our favorite way to roll. There’s no need to rush out to beat the traffic and we can relax between meals. The Golden Plough Inn rooms are lovely and quiet, plus in the mornings, the gardens here are such a lovely place to enjoy your coffee. It’s really great for romantic getaways, families, or shopping trips with friends.

Bring a Cooler Bag – There are so many great things to try here, but honestly, there’s only so much a person can eat in a day.  Instead of missing out, we like to pack a cooler bag to keep our gourmet treats or leftovers cool on the ride home. In the meantime, if you’re staying overnight, the Golden Plough rooms also have mini-fridges to keep your food and drinks cold until you’re ready to leave.

Don’t Miss the Annual Summer Sidewalk Sale (August 6-8 ) – If you love a good sale (and really who doesn’t?), don’t miss the annual summer sidewalk sale where the shops line up their best summer bargains and specials.

More Ways to Save $ – Before visiting, be sure to download the Peddler’s Village mobile app (available on iTunes and Google Play) for help finding your way around, but also to access special store coupons! Check out their special summer packages for discounted overnight stays at the Golden Plough Inn. Active duty military, veterans, and seniors get 10% off at the Golden Plough Inn, Buttonwood Grill, Cock ‘n Bull Restaurant, Earl’s New American, Hart’s Tavern, and Giggleberry Fair, Mondays through Thursdays.

Do the Peddlers Village Scavenger Hunt, Win a Prize! :  In the app, if you can find the scavenger hunt inside that will take you all over the village. Answer the questions correctly, you’ll be led to a prize! Hint: it’s edible so you may want to complete it before you sit down for a big meal.

Bring your Pooch – The grounds of the village are dog friendly and you’re welcome to eat with your pooch outside on the patio at Earl’s.  While The Golden Plough Inn does not currently accommodate pets, there are hotels & AirBNB’s in the area that do. Don’t forget to visit pet-friendly boutiques The Total Animal and Tails of the Village.

Immune-Boosting Beet-Turmeric Refresher | Better Living

Just because it’s hot outside, doesn’t mean our immune-systems can’t use a little extra love. So why not do it with a refreshing mocktail in hand? To help you stay cool while nourishing your body, try this healthy drink recipe for an Immune Boosting Beet-Turmeric Refresher made with green tea, turmeric, ginger, lemon and beet crystals. This healthy mocktail is not only hydrating, but it’s kind of like having a sunset (or sunrise) in your glass. Great for your immune system, it’s also nutrient and antioxidant-rich, super-refreshing and easy to make. You may even have most of the ingredients in your pantry right now.

Here are some of the immune-boosting health benefits of what’s in this drink:

Green Tea

Providing the liquid base for this recipe, green tea contains a rich concentration of plant compounds called polyphenols that act as antioxidants in the body. They have also been proven in studies to have a number of health benefits including boosting our metabolism, protecting our cells from the effects of aging and disease. (1) The polyphenols in green tea called catechins (ECGC is one type) are especially beneficial and have shown evidence to be anti-microbial, anti-fungal, antiviral, and also have the ability to strengthen immune cells, according to recent research. (2)

Lemon

Shown to have both antibacterial and antiviral effects, tart and tangy lemons are also an excellent natural source of vitamin C, an antioxidant, and an essential vitamin that can help to protect and stimulate the production of white blood cells while protecting them. Like green tea, lemons also contain polyphenols. Not only can these natural antioxidants help to boost your immune system, but they also act as a prebiotic, which can help promote the growth of the good bacteria which keeps your gut healthy where 70% of your immune system cells reside. ( 3)

Two tablespoons of lemon juice is all you’ll need for this recipe.

Mānuka Honey

Raw honey is a nourishing food that has antioxidant, antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties. (4) It’s also great as a sore throat remedy! But mānuka honey (made by bees that pollinate the wild mānuka tree in New Zealand) in particular has health boosting qualities not found in other types of honey. In general, the antimicrobial properties in all honey is due to its hydrogen peroxide content. But mānuka honey contains enzymes and compounds that still continue to act powerfully even when the hydrogen peroxide content is removed. It’s the action and content of three signature compounds—Methylglyoxal (MGO), Leptosperin, and Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)—that make mānuka honey so unique and beneficial. (5)

Since mānuka honey is such a specialized and limited product you want to make sure you’re getting the real thing. We recommend getting your mānuka honey from Flora Health. All their mānuka honey is tested and graded at the time of packaging for authenticity, purity, and quality.

If you don’t have mānuka honey for this recipe, whatever you have in your pantry will do. If you’d like to try Manuka honey for an extra boost, you can get the authentic stuff here.

Ginger

Used in traditional medicine in China and India for over 2000 years, ginger is well-known for its spicy flavor and ability to soothe an upset stomach. Rich in antioxidants like gingerol, ginger also has properties that can help relieve pain, inflammation, and protect your body from the damage caused by infection. Initial studies indicate that ginger may also help boost your immune response. (6). One test-tube study in particular found that fresh ginger helped boost immune response and antiviral effects against HRSV, a virus which causes respiratory infections. (7)

For this recipe you’ll simply need to finely grate some fresh ginger and steep it with your tea.

Turmeric

A member of the ginger family, the turmeric root is a superfood that’s been used medicinally in India for 4000 years. Its potent immune-boosting properties lie within its vibrant gold pigment called curcumin. The major active compound in turmeric, curcumin is not only an antioxidant with the ability to help cleanse the liver, but studies have also shown it to be anti-inflammatory with antibacterial, antiviral and antiparasitic properties that can help boost the activity of our immune cells. (8)

Turmeric has a similar flavor to ginger, but without the same spicy bite. For this recipe you can use the dried turmeric you can find in the spice section of your grocery store. Raw turmeric root can also be used, but it can be hard to find and messy, as it can easily stain your fingers, the counter and anything else it touches. To get the most out of using raw turmeric root you’ll also need a juicer or a blender. Go with the dried spice, if you’re looking to keep things neat and simple.

6 Amazing Benefits Of Beets + Recipe; Chocolate Cupcakes With Beet Crystal Whipped CreamBeets

There’s no denying beets are super healthy. Not only are beets a good source of trace minerals like zinc, iron, potassium, magnesium, and manganese, but beets also provide a healthy dose of immune-boosting vitamin C. Known as a natural source of nitrates which are great for our cardiovascular system, beets also have one of the highest vegetable contents of the B vitamin folate (vitamin B9). This natural form of folic acid is important in helping to prevent birth defects, while protecting our cells against cancer and cardiovascular disease and helping strengthen the immune system. ( 9 )

Beets are also one of the few veggies high in betalain, a powerful anti-inflammatory antioxidant and phytonutrient that gives beets their red vibrant color. It’s especially beneficial for the liver, where it can help support our natural detoxification pathways and where we also store the largest concentrations of immune cells known as phagocytes, a type of white blood cell that detects and neutralizes foreign invaders by engulfing them.(10)

For even more immune-boosting potential, beets also contain glutathione. Known as “the body’s super hero,” “the mother of all antioxidants” and the “master antioxidant”, glutathione works by promoting detoxification pathways in the body and aiding and protecting our immune cells. It even helps recycle other antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid and CoQ10. This nutrient is so important that if our levels of glutathione drop, so does our body’s ability to fight off infection and recover from illnesses.(11) And eating your beets is a great way to keep your levels up.

Tips for Making the Beet-Turmeric Refresher

This immune-boosting drink recipe can easily be made ahead of time. Just make your green tea and add your ginger and turmeric to let it steep. The heat from the green tea can help release some of the beneficial compounds in the turmeric, but it’s best to add the mānuka honey when the tea has cooled a bit to preserve its active compounds which are heat sensitive.

You can serve this tea immediately or refrigerate the tea until ready to use. Just stir in the lemon and the beet crystals just before serving to get that gorgeous sunset effect in your glass.

Enjoy!

Easy Strawberry Jalapeño Salsa | Better Living

One of the finest components of spring and early summertime is the arrival of contemporary ripe strawberries. When you feel strawberries you could consider of issues like strawberry shortcake, strawberry cheesecake, freshly sliced strawberries in excess of a salad or perhaps a clean strawberry smoothie. But if you’ve never experimented with employing strawberries in your salsa you’re undoubtedly missing out.

This salsa is fruity, spicy and tangy. If you’re hunting for a new way to take pleasure in strawberries we believe you will like it. Let us get begun!

Substances You will Have to have For This Uncomplicated Strawberry Jalapeño Salsa:

Strawberries – Stick to contemporary ripe strawberries for this salsa recipe. Frozen won’t function. Be positive to totally wash them and remove their tops.

Jalapeños – Jalapeños can vary greatly in their degree of heat. Several I have been getting not too long ago can be as moderate as a bell pepper whereas some others may have adequate heat to shoot steam out of your ears. You just will not be equipped to know right until you give it a nibble. It’s like nature’s way of playing a small joke. Just keep in mind to dress in gloves when you de-seed your jalapeño peppers so you really don’t melt away your fingers if they happen to be a spicy batch. Serrano peppers can be substituted in this recipe and they will absolutely be spicy.

Crimson Onion– I like the mild sweetness that crimson onions lend to this salsa. Spanish or white onions would work just as perfectly. Yellow onions may possibly be a bit powerful but if which is all you have get the job done with it.

Limes – The juice of two or a few fresh limes should do. Use additional if your limes are on the dryer side and aren’t giving you adequate juice. When buying for limes I uncover the juiciest types have a thinner smoother skin and are often lighter in color. If it would seem difficult or doesn’t give when you give it a squeeze you might want to get yet another

Cilantro – A member of the parsley loved ones and also referred to as Mexican parsley or coriander to our close friends in the U.K.,  cilantro provides a layer of clean brightness to salsas that can’t genuinely be replicated. Whilst I’m definitely #teamcilantro I know some of us are genetically programmed to type of dislike it. If you don’t treatment for it you can go away it out. We hugely endorse though. Clean the leaves to clear away sand and grime and then pat the leaves dry before chopping.

Orange Zest – Orange zest lends an additional charming layer of citrusy orange flavor and fragrance to this salsa that pairs flawlessly with the lime juice and strawberries. If you really do not have an orange on hand you can just omit this component as it is not a recipe breaker. If you want your salsa on the sweeter aspect you can increase some of the orange juice as nicely. Including the orange juice can also aid if your strawberries are not also sweet or you’re producing this out of strawberry year.

Salt & Pepper – This dynamic duo will carry all the flavors in this salsa jointly.

Seize your reducing board and give all your substances a dice. Toss it in a bowl and toss. That’s it! Refrigerate it until eventually all set to serve.

SERVING YOUR SALSA

This salsa is certainly tasty with tortilla chips and guacamole! But it’s also great for spooning above grilled or seared fish like salmon, tuna mahi-mahi, cod, trout. Consider it with our Baja fish taco recipe, in a heat corn tortilla and a very little crumble of goat cheese. This salsa is most effective relished and served the exact day produced but can be relished inside of 2 times.

How To Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer At Home

*We partnered with DailyVita.com to bring you this post. All the information and opinions presented here are our own. DailyVita.com is the ultimate online shopping experience for nutritional supplements, natural foods and beauty products, essential oils, and gifts!

It’s a fact that keeping your hands clean is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself against germs and reduce the spread of infection to yourself and others. And since the outbreak and spread of the highly contagious coronavirus epidemic hand hygiene has never been more important in modern times.

To keep hands clean and to reduce as many germs from the surface of your skin as possible, the CDC strongly advises washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds anytime you touch a shared or possibly contaminated surface. Surfaces like door handles, railings, ATMs, grocery store carts, mailboxes, packages, cell phones, keyboards, garbage bags, etc are all fair game for germs to hang out and wait for you to swing by so they can latch on. It’s also important to wash your hands after you cough, blow your nose, use the bathroom, have handled pets or pet treats, or have wiped down dirty surfaces or have used chemicals. And don’t forget about washing up before and after prepping food, especially if you’re handling raw meat.

It’s no surprise that when news of the coronavirus pandemic began to come out and the virus started to spread, hand sanitizer was one of the first things to fly off store shelves. Global shortages have made it difficult to find and if you do see it being offered online it’s often for bloated prices from third-party vendors looking to score big.

Can’t Find Hand Sanitizer? Make Your Own!

Made in controlled sterile environments in just the right proportions, commercial hand sanitizer is usually your best bet. But you can easily make your own hand sanitizer solution until the commercial stuff finds its way back into the market.

These two, easy DIY recipes are for alcohol-based natural hand sanitizers that you can spray and then rub onto your hands for times when washing with soap and water isn’t an option.

Tip: Stick to making your hand sanitizer in small batches. Alcohol can evaporate over time which can affect the ratio of alcohol to the other ingredients possibly decreasing its efficacy.

Homemade Hand Sanitizing Spray

Here Are The Ingredients You’ll Need

The ingredients you’ll need to make your own hand sanitizer spray are listed down below. Of course, you can try gathering them on your own, but to make things super easy, online health and wellness shop DailyVita sells two different super convenient Hand Sanitizer Kits complete with everything you need to make your own all-natural hand sanitizing spray. Each kit will make you approximately 16 two-ounce bottles.

Isopropyl Alcohol – For your hand sanitizer solution to be effective against COVID-19 and other susceptible germs your hand sanitizer must have a concentration of at least 60%. The DailyVita Homemade Spray  Kit comes with a 32-ounce bottle of 70% Isopropyl Alcohol.

making hand sanitzer with 70% rubbing alcohol pouring into a measuring glass

Jojoba Oil or Fractionated Coconut Oil –  All hand sanitizers include a moisturizing ingredient. This keeps hands from drying out and cracking which can make you vulnerable to the germs you’re trying to protect against. We suggest jojoba or liquid fractionated coconut oil which are both included in the DailyVita kit, but you can also use aloe vera gel or apricot kernel oil as well. These all absorb fast, are healthy for skin, and won’t leave you with a greasy feeling afterward.

Jojoba oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm chapped, irritated skin, and reduce redness. It also has vitamins like E and B which can promote skin healing. Coconut oil is super hydrating, anti-microbial, and like jojoba is known to reduce inflammation.

jojoba oil being pipetted into a small bottle of 70% rubbing alcohol to make hand sanitizer

Essential Oils – A few drops of essential oils will give your hand sanitizer spray a nice scent that will leave your hands feeling fresh. And the best part of making your own hand sanitizer is that you can customize it to smell however you like. They also come with added benefits. Essential oils like tea tree oil and myrrh have been proven in studies for having antimicrobial, anti-viral, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce inflammation and soothe the skin. Lavender essential oil is also nourishing and calming to the skin and can promote healing. Citrus oils like lemon and orange are also anti-microbial and smell simply amazing. Always do a spot test on your skin to detect if you have an allergy before applying.

  • Clean Surface To Work On
  • Glass Measuring Cup
  • Small Spray Bottle (2 ounce) – Order these bottles online or get the DailyVita kit which comes with an awesome little spray bottle that works great. Be sure to clean before filling.

Easy Gluten-Free Chicken Pesto Pasta

*We partnered with DailyVita.com to bring you this recipe. All the information and opinions presented here are our own. DailyVita.com is the ultimate online shopping experience for nutritional supplements, natural foods and beauty products, essential oils, and gifts!

Spring and summer eating is all about fresh herbs, fresh flavors, and light dishes. It’s also the perfect time to start experimenting with bringing healthier ingredients into your everyday meals.

For an easy and delicious protein-packed pasta dish with fresh basil and pesto flavors, try our recipe for Gluten-Free Chicken Pesto Pasta. Perfect for lunch, dinner or brunch dish, we toss gluten-free pasta with fresh pesto, red grape tomatoes, spring asparagus, toasted pine nuts, and grated cheese. Before serving we top it with sliced rotisserie or home roasted chicken for a satisfyingly delicious and healthy anytime meal.

If you’ve never made pesto before be sure to give it a try. It’s incredibly easy, healthy and adds a lovely herbaceous flavor to not only pasta dishes but also to salad dressings, sandwiches or spooned over grilled fish and meats. We’ve added links throughout the post to help you find the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe. They’re all available at Daily Vita, an online health and wellness source for all your healthy pantry needs.

WHAT’S IN PESTO?

Pesto, a healthy, fresh and herbal salsa-like sauce from Genoa, Italy is the major flavor component of our pasta dish.  Along with fresh basil it also traditionally consists of garlic, pine nuts (also called piñón, pinoli, or pignoli), a hard cheese, such as Parmigiano-Reggiano all smoothly blended together with olive oil. I find adding a pinch of salt and a dash of lemon juice adds a tangy brightness and a yummy savory finish.

Here are the ingredients and some of the nutritional benefits of the fresh basil pesto:

Now Foods pesto ingredients like pine nuts, walnuts and extravirgin olive oil. available at Daily Vita

BASIL – A green leafy herb from the mint family, basil provides a rich source of vitamin K, vitamin A and minerals like zinc, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It contains very little calories. You’ll need about 2 cups of packed fresh basil for this recipe and you can find it in the produce section of your grocery store.

OLIVE OIL – This anti-inflammatory powerhouse and a key ingredient in the Mediterranean diet provides a rich source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and age-fighting antioxidants. Olive oil is what gives pesto its smooth consistency. Try the Now Foods Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil available at Daily Vita.

Recommended Product: Now Foods Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

PINE NUTS – These delicious edible nuts that come from the cones of pine trees are considered a hardened fruit rather than an actual nut. They’re high in vitamin K, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc and are a good source of iron, thiamine E, niacin and healthy fat. Pine nuts also provide a good amount of the antioxidant lutein which is beneficial for eye health.

Pine nuts are traditional to pesto and I suggest lightly toasting them before adding them to the pesto.  You’ll need ½ cup of lightly toasted pine nuts for this pesto recipe and an additional ½ cup toasted for the final pasta dish. We love the certified organic pine nuts from Now Foods which I find taste incredibly fresh and are an addicting and satisfying crunchy snack straight from the package.

If you’re allergic to pine nuts you can substitute almonds or walnuts instead. If you’re completely nut-free, try substituting hemp seed, which has a mild nutty flavor and is also high in protein, iron, phosphorus, and magnesium. It’s great for adding into your favorite dishes like salads, soups, and pasta for a tasty boost of nutrients.

Recommended Products:

NOW Real Food® Walnuts

GARLIC – Antimicrobial in nature, garlic provides a rich source of potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and selenium. It’s also high in antioxidants and is often associated with the compound allicin which has been shown in studies to improve heart health and have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activities. We like 2 cloves of garlic in our pesto recipe, but feel free to add more if you can’t get enough of the stuff.

PARMESAN CHEESE – This low-lactose cheese is a good source of calcium which is believed to be beneficial for optimal bone health. For this recipe, you’ll need about ½ cup grated for the pesto and an additional ½ cup tossed into the pasta. Romano cheese may be substituted or try a combination of half Parmesan and half Romano.

LEMON JUICE – High in vitamin C, lemons and healthy plant compounds, lemons can improve heart health, digestion as well as aid in increasing immunity. They also offer vitamin B6, thiamin (B1), iron, copper and calcium. Lemon juice adds a nice flavor to this pesto and can be added to taste.

HOW TO MAKE THE FRESH BASIL PESTO

Back in the day before kitchen appliances were a thing, pesto was ground into a paste by hand using a mortar and pestle. While you are welcome to use that lovely, yet slightly laborious technique, a food processor, mini chopper or blender will certainly do the trick with less effort on your part. Just pack all the ingredients in the food processor and then stream the oil in while blending. Depending on your preferences you may opt for a super smooth pesto or one that has a little more texture by blending more or less.

STORING THE PESTO

This recipe makes about 1 ¼ cups of pesto, but you’ll only need about 1/2 to 2/3 cup for the pasta dish. Store the leftover pesto in an airtight container or jar.

Pesto Storage Tip: Adding an extra layer of olive oil over the top of the pesto while storing will help to preserve the freshness and color of the pesto.

MAKING THE PASTA

Growing up in an Italian family, loving pasta is in my blood. But what I don’t love is that heavy bloated and tired feeling I get right after eating it. And it’s been more than a handful of times that I’ve headed to the couch for a post pasta snooze. Wheat pasta is a high glycemic food, which can cause a spike in your blood sugar. As your body works quickly to remove the excess sugar, insulin levels then take a nosedive giving you that feeling of a “crash” making you feel super drowsy. If you love pasta, but want to avoid the fatigue, eating it along with plenty of protein can help slow the release of glucose into your system preventing that total blood sugar spike and crash.

While this trick works for fatigue it doesn’t necessarily work for that bloated heavy feeling pasta can cause. So what gets rid of both the drowsiness and the bloat? For me I’ve found substituting white wheat pasta for a plant-based pasta does the trick. In this recipe, I used the Living Now® Gluten-Free Organic Quinoa Penne. Made with quinoa, rice, and amaranth, the taste of and texture is just like traditional pasta, but made without wheat, corn, GMOs, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, hydrogenated oils or additives. To me, it tastes just as delicious as regular pasta, but it also cooks up perfectly al dente giving you that satisfying tender bite. It also leaves you feeling light and energetic after eating, which is exactly why I’m hooked for life.

To cook, I boiled it in salted water for about 10 minutes for a perfectly al dente pasta. It also reheats beautifully making for some delicious next-day leftovers. You can find it at Daily Vita linked below.

After draining and cooling the pasta (it should be warm but not hot) simply toss it with sliced cherry tomatoes, cut asparagus, the pesto, grated cheese, toasted pine nuts, the juice of one lemon and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve with sliced store-bought rotisserie chicken or roasted with additional pesto spooned over the top. It’s healthy, light, and absolutely delicious!

Easy Fresh Basil Pesto | Better Living

Made with only a few ingredients, this recipe for fresh basil pesto packs a ton of flavor that adds a burst of vibrant, herbal brightness to whatever dish you add it to. Pesto is a salsa-like sauce made with basil, pine nuts, and olive oil that originated in Genoa, Italy. It’s not only healthy, but it’s also a super versatile way to punch up the flavor of pasta dishes, salads, pizzas, dips, sandwiches, grilled meats and seafood. You can even drizzle pesto on bread and over cheeses, like goat and fresh mozzarella. It stores well and if you have a big summer bounty of basil from your garden, you can even make this pesto and freeze it so you can have fresh pesto anytime.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

BASIL – You’ll need about 2 cups of packed fresh basil for this recipe. A green leafy herb from the mint family, basil provides a rich source of vitamin K, vitamin A and minerals like zinc, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. It contains very little calories.

OLIVE OIL – This anti-inflammatory powerhouse and a key ingredient in the Mediterranean diet provides a rich source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and age-fighting antioxidants. Olive oil is what gives pesto its smooth buttery consistency.

PINE NUTS –  Pine nuts are traditional to pesto and be sure to lightly toast them before adding them to the pesto to enhance their nutty flavor.  You’ll need ½ cup of lightly toasted pine nuts for this pesto recipe. If you don’t have pine nuts, try substituting walnuts or almonds. For a nut-free pesto, hemp seed is a great stand-in. It’s also

GARLIC – We like 2 cloves of garlic in our pesto recipe, but feel free to add more if you can’t get enough of the stuff.

PARMESAN CHEESE – You’ll need about ½ cup of finely grated cheese for this pesto. Pecorino Romano cheese may be substituted or try a combo of half Parmesan and half Romano. For a vegan pesto substitute the cheese with nutritional yeast.

LEMON JUICE – You don’t absolutely need to add lemon juice, but a little balances the flavors nicely in this pesto. High in vitamin C, lemons, and healthy plant compounds, lemons can improve heart health, digestion as well as aid in increasing immunity. They also offer vitamin B6, thiamin (B1), iron, copper and calcium.

STORING THE PESTO

Leftover pesto can be stored in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator. Adding an extra layer of olive oil over the top of the pesto while storing will help to preserve the freshness and color of the pesto. It can last up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.

You can also opt to freeze your pesto. A neat trick is to spoon it into ice-cube trays, freeze and then pop them out into a freezer bag or jar. Grab one or two cubes anytime you want to punch up a sauce or dressing with some fresh flavor.
